One of the questions that I get asked all the time is how I create flatlays. Although it seems to me like something easy, it does require some practice and a few things to keep in mind. I thought it would be helpful to include some of my knowledge as a designer to guide you through this photography style.
Una de las preguntas que más me hacen todo el tiempo es cómo hago mis flatlays. Aunque a mí me parezca algo muy fácil, sí require algo de práctica y algunas cosas a considerar. Pensé que sería de ayuda incluir algo de mi conocimiento como diseñadora para guiarlos en este estilo de fotografía.
To make this easy, I'm going to break down the post in sections. I'm using photos from my Instagram that you have probably seen in previous posts too. There is not really a rule for flatlay photography but taking the few tips in consideration will help you create a more even-looking photo stock for your blog or any social media. It all comes down to finding your own style and how you lay the items.
Para hacer esto fácil, voy a romper el post en secciones. Estoy usando fotos de mi Instagram que probablemente ya han visto en posts anteriores también. No hay en sí una regla para hacer flatlays pero tomar en cuenta estos tips va a ayudar a que tu librería de fotos luzca más uniforme en tu blog o cualquier red social. Todo cae en encontrar tu propio estilo y cómo acomodas los objetos.
FIND A COLOR PALETTE
If you haven't realized by now that my favorite color is black then this whole post is a fail. All of my photos revolve around a monochromatic theme where black is always more prominent. I like the combination of caramel and bronze tones with it, giving the photos a natural warm feel. One of my favorite colors too is pink, be it a blue toned or the new millenial. I play around with different hues but always balance the colors by adding more black—my signature color.
Si no se han dado cuenta por ahora de que mi color favorito es el negro entonces todo este post es una falla. Todas mis fotos giran en torno a un tema monocromático donde el negro siempre es más prominente. Me gusta la combinación de tonos caramelo y bronce con éste, dándole a mis fotos un aire cálido natural. Unos de mis colores favoritos también es el rosa, ya sea azulado o el nuevo milenial. Juego con diferentes matices pero siempre balanceo los colores agregando más negro—mi color firma.
PICK A CLEAN BACKGROUND
In order to make your products stand out you must use a clean background that wont disrupt whatever is going on in the photo. Too many items might look best on top of a plain white surface, especially if these objets have color variations or textures in themselves. If the items are too much alike (same color, very minimal designs) you can add a bit more action to the shot with a textured background. Every blogger's favorite is grey marble and I can see why. It adds a lot to a simple photo but doesn't take attention from the objets on top of it. These two and a white silky fabric are my favorite backgrounds.
Para hacer que tus productos resalten necesitas usar un fondo que no vaya a interferir con lo que esté pasando en la foto. Muchos objetos pueden verse mejor encima de una superficie blanca, en especial si éstos tienen variaciones de color o texturas en sí mismos. Si los artículos se parecen mucho (mismo color, diseños minimalistas) puedes agregar un poco más de acción a la toma con un fondo de textura. El favorito de todo blogger es el mármol gris y puedo ver por qué. Le da mucho más a una foto simple pero no le quita atención a los objetos encima. Estos dos y una tela blanca sedosa son mis fondos favoritos.
THE CAMERA ALWAYS EATS FIRST
As weird as it sounds, food flatlays are the most fun. There are so many colors and endless props that they require minimal effort. Food is where you can have more fun, unless you want to make the dish stand out then you should use the previously mentioned backgrounds. The reason why I included these photos was to show you that you can still keep your color palette regardless what you photograph. Food flatlays always look natural and you don't have to spend hours arranging products.
Tan curioso como suena, los flatlays de comida son los más divertidos. Hay tantos colores y props infinitas que requieren el mínimo esfuerzo. La comida es donde más te puedes divertir, al menos de que quieras hacer el platillo resaltar, entonces usa los fondos que mencioné antes. La razón por la que incluí estas fotos fue para mostrarles que aún puedes mantener tu paleta de colores independientemente de qué fotografíes. Los flatlays de comida siempre se ven naturales y no tienes que gastar horas acomodando products.
BAG SPILLS
Even if they're staged or not, bag spills are many people's favorites. The best way to do them is by creating a visual gradient from one corner to another, normally from the bottom to the top. To give it a more natural air, you can stick a few items inside the bag and gradually spread them out with more separation until the opposite edge of your shot is empty.
No importa si son falsos o no, los derrames de bolsa son el favorito de todos. La mejor forma de hacerlos es creando un degradado visual de una orilla a otra, normalmente de abajo hacia arriba. Para darle un aire más natural, puedes meter algunos objetos dentro del bolso y esparcirlos gradualmente con más separación hasta que el otro extremo de tu toma esté vacío.
PROPS AND LAYOUT
Collecting weird items will soon become your favorite hobby if you're into flatlays. Props are the decorative part of these shots and they can work either as fillers or as main objets. In the first photo from above you can see a more structured layout where every single item plays an important role, arranged in a more geometric way where there are no empty spaces. I normally use makeup brushes as props, but in that photo they were part of the main shot. In the second photo I used two layers of objets: the first one being firm and straight, and the second one with products on top in random placements to make it less rigid and small items (props) to fill the gaps.
Coleccionar objetos curiosos va a ser tu hobby si te gustan los flatlays. Los props son la parte decorativa de estas tomas y pueden funcionar como relleno o como objetos principales. En la primera foto de arriba puedes ver un acomodo más estructurado donde cada objeto juega un rol importante, acomodado de una forma geométrica donde no hay espacios vacíos. Normalmente uso brochas de maquillaje como props pero en esa foto eran parte de la toma importante. En la segunda foto usé dos capas de objetos: la primera para ser firme y derecha, y la segunda con productos encima en acomodos aleatorios que la hacen menos rígida y pequeños objetos (props) para rellenar los espacios.
PLAY AROUND WITH WHATEVER YOU HAVE
You don't really need a bunch of items to make a good flatlay. It's all a matter of arrangement and lighting. Recently I've been playing around with harsh shadows in a flatlay that would look very simple with plain white background and light. In the next posts I will go through other topics such as lighting, editing and equipment that I use or like to take my photos.
No necesitas un montón de artículos para hacer un flatlay bueno. Todo se trata de acomodo y luz. Recientemente he estado jugando con sombras duras en un flatlay que se vería muy simple en fondo y luz blancos planos.
